03 Suited to / not suited to

Who this is for

Suited to

  • Freelancers who set a rate once and have never revisited the arithmetic behind it
  • People moving from an employed salary to self-employment and needing the equivalent number
  • Anyone quoting fixed fees who suspects the revision rounds are eating the margin

Not suited to

  • Agencies pricing multi-person projects — the capacity model is built around one person
  • Anyone looking for market rate data or a benchmark; there is none in here, and we would not invent it

Note

The workbook does the arithmetic on figures you supply. It is not pricing, tax or financial advice, and it contains no market rate data.

08 Questions about this product

Questions about this product

Does it tell me what to charge?

It tells you what rate your own inputs require. Whether the market will pay it is a separate question the workbook cannot answer and does not pretend to.

Does it handle tax?

Only as a percentage you set aside from gross income. Tax rules differ by country and by legal form, so nothing here is calculated for a specific jurisdiction, and none of it is tax advice.

Can I price hourly rather than daily?

Yes. The rate calculator has an hours-per-day input, and the project pricing tab works from either. Mixed hourly and day-rate work in one file is not modelled.

Why Google Sheets only?

The workbook is small and gets edited constantly while you argue with the numbers, which suits Sheets. It exports to .xlsx if you would rather keep it in Excel.
